All-glass open-split interface for capillary GC/MS

This paper describes a design for an all-glass GC/MS interface. The design has advantages due to low dead volume, lack of column effluent adsorption and degradation, simple interface production and installation, and ease of column mounting/dismounting.     

On the applicability of the “abt” concept

Kaiser's “abt” concept rests on the experimental establishment of a linear relation between band width at half height, b_0.5, and capacity ratio, k, according to His column specification quantity, h_real, is dependent on the square of the slope a, obtained from a linear regression analysis based on this relation. It is shown in the present paper that an improvement of the experimental conditions leading to a lower extra-column contribution to band broadening, b, introduces a tendency towards a negative curvature in the plot at low k values. The mean slope increases, and an uncritical linear regression would yield an h_real-value which is higher than before and which would be in the opposite direction to the requirements of a reliable column specification. Generally the linear regression analysis has to be moved to higher k regions in cases of curvature, especially as it is also shown that h_real is an estimation of the traditional HETP value, H∞, that would be obtained when k approaches infinity. This theoretically expected relation is a strong motivation for the use of h_real as a column specification, since the b_0.5-value associated with H∞ is expected to be practically independent of b.     

Erfahrungen mit der flammenlosen Atomabsorption bei der Untersuchung biologischen Materials auf Spuren von Schwermetallen

Zusammenfassung Es wird über den Einsatz der flammenlosen AAS bei der Bestimmung von Blei, Zink und Thallium in Blut, Urin und Gewebe berichtet. Wegen der hohen Empfindlichkeit der Methode kann auf eine Abtrennung und Anreicherung der zu bestimmenden Elemente verzichtet werden. Durch die Verwendung eines Untergrundkompensators können Fehlbestimmungen, die durch das Auftreten von Rauch beim Atomisieren bedingt sind, vermieden werden. Wenn die Proben nur wenig verdünnt werden können, muß mit dem Einfluß dritter Partner aus dem biologischen Material gerechnet werden. Dieser Einfluß kann durch Zusatz von Salpetersäure zu den Proben im Graphitrohr vermindert, aber nicht völlig aufgehoben werden. Die Leistungsfähigkeit der flammenlosen AAS wird am Beispiel der Bleibestimmung in Eierschalen und Eiinhalt wild lebender Vögel gezeigt.Herrn Lühl vom Forstzoologischen Institut der Universität Freiburg sei auch hier für die Beschaffung der Proben und Frau Engel für die Durchführung der Untersuchungen gedankt.     

Kinetics of the mediatory reduction ofgem-dichlorocyclopropanes

The effect of the nature of organic electron transfer agents and of Pt^II, Pd^II, Rh^II, Co^II, Ni^II, Cu^II, Cr^III, Mn^II, Ti^III, V^III, Zn^II, and Ag^I metal ions on the kinetics of the homogeneous reduction ofgem-dichlorocyclopropanes has been studied. Pt^II, Pd^II, Rh^III, Co^II, and Ni^II ions accelerate this process, V^III and Ag^I ions exert practically no effect on the reduction rate, and the rest of the metal ions exhibit inhibitor properties.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Liquid fluidized bed starter culture ofTrichoderma reesei for cellulase production

A starter culture ofTrichoderma reesei (Rut-C30) prepared in a liquid fluidized bed reactor (LFBR) gave better growth and greater cellulase production in submerged fermentation than a conventional shake flask inoculum. The LFBR starter was prepared by first coatingT. reesei spores to 0.25 mm size corncob (1.0x10⁸g^-1) in a medium containing 1.0% corncob, 0.5 gL^-1 xylose and 0.1 gL^-1 lactose in a balanced salt solution, then fluidizing the particles in the LFBR for 36 h to allow germination of the spores, and covering the particles with an approx 30 μm thick biofilm. This biofilm that developed in constant adherence to the lignocellulosic carrier, apparently became well adapted to grow rapidly on insoluble cellulose substrates (Solca Floc), and had the enzymes of the cellulase complex induced for increased cellulase production. The LFBR starter used in a stirred tank reactor (STR) gave 15 gL^-1 biomass production and 6.5 IU mL^-1 overall cellulase activity with a volumetric productivity of 64 IU L^-1h^-1 in a 5 d fermentation, compared with a 7 d shake flask inoculum that gave 11 gL^-1 biomass and 3.2 IU mL^-1 cellulase activity, with a volumetric productivity of 31IU L^-1h^-1. The LFBR starter culture retained its viability in dry storage for 6–9 mo.     

1H,13C,and19F NMR study of products of the interaction of the η5-cyclopentadienyldicarbonyliron(ii) anion,CpFe(CO)2 −, with pentafluorobenzoyl chloride

Interaction of the ⁵-cyclopentadienyldicarbonyliron(II) anion with pentafluorobenzoyl chloride affords C₆F₅COFe(CO)₂Cp, CpFe(CO)₂C₆F₄COFe(CO)₂Cp, and CpFe(CO)₂C₆F₄C₆F₄Fe(CO)₂Cp. Synthesis,crystal structure,magnetism, and absorption spectra of A2UX5 Type Halides (A = K,Rb; X = Cl,Br, I)

The ternary uranium(III) halides A₂UX₅ (A = K, Rb; X = Cl, Br, I) have been prepared from the binary components AX and UX₃ in sealed tantalum containers. According to their Guinier X-ray powder patterns, they all crystallize with the K₂PrCl₅/Y₂HfS₅ type of structure. Lattice constants for ambient temperature are reported. Single-crystal structure refinemens were undertaken for K₂UI₅ and Rb₂UCl₅. Magnetic susceptibility data were recorded with a SQUID magnetometer from liquid helium to room temperature. One-dimensional (intrachain) and three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering occur at low temperatures dependent upon the U³⁺? U³⁺ distance. Absorption spectra were recorded between 4 000 and 28 000 cm^?1. They show f—f transitions typical for U³⁺ and, depending on the halide, very strong f—d transitions above 14 000 to 15 000 cm^?1, respectively.     

Oxidation of α-methylstyrene on an MCM-22 encapsulated (<Emphasis Type="Italic">R,R</Emphasis>)-(−)-<Emphasis Type="Italic">N,N′</Emphasis>-bis(3,5-di-<Emphasis Type="Italic">tert</Emphasis>-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminocobalt(II) catalyst

(R, R)-(−)-N, N′-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminocobalt(II) was encapsulated into MCM-22 using the zeolite synthesis method. The encapsulated catalyst proved to be active in the oxidation of α-methylstyrene with NaOCl with higher specific activity than the homogeneous catalyst. At the same time, this encapsulated catalyst was completely inactive in the hydrolytic kinetic resolution of racemic styrene oxide. This observation is in a good correlation with the assumption of the cooperative bimetallic mechanism proposed by Annis and Jacobsen.     

Oxidative cyclocondensation of cyclic thio-and selenoureas. 5. 2-Thioxothieno-and 2-thioxopyrido[2,3-<Emphasis Type="Italic">d</Emphasis>]pyrimidin-4-ones

A study was carried out on the oxidative cyclocondensation of 2-thioxothieno-and 2-thioxopyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-ones. The thiophene ring with excess π-electron density facilitates the reaction, while the pyridine ring with diminished π-electron density hinders it. 2-Thioxothieno-[2,3-d]pyridimin-4-ones were converted into previously unreported 7H,13H-[1,2,4]thiadiazolo-[3,2-b:5,4-b′]bis(thieno[2,3-d]pyridimine-7,13-diones). __________ Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 9, pp. 1424–1427, September, 2007.     

Direct capillary electrophoretic determination of three chemotherapeutic drugs in human urine

Summary Capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) has been used for direct determination of 6-thioguanine, methotrexate, and 5-fluorouracil in human urine, by use of a fused-silica capillary (60.2 cm×75 μm i.d.). Separation was performed after hydrodynamic injection for 7 s; the separation potential and capillary temperature were 25 kV and 35°C, respectively. A 45mm borate buffer solution (pH 9.2) was used as separation electrolyte. Under these conditions the analysis takes approximately 10 min and interday precision of migration times and corrected peak areas is satisfactory. A linear response over the concentration range 3.0–20.0 mg L¹ was observed for the three chemotherapeutic drugs in diluted human urine. Detection limits (s/n=3) for 6-thioguanine and methotrexate were approximately 1.60 mg L¹ in diluted human urine; that for fluorouracil was 2.60 mg L¹. A 2-ml volume of human urine was diluted with 2-mL of water and introduced directly into the electrophoresis system. CZE was shown to be a good method with regard to simplicity, satisfactory precision, and sensitivity. This method resulted in especially excellent recoveries for determination of methotrexate in all the different urine samples analysed (n=10).
